Once you get there, it’s a downhill from there! Because getting coffee off the Sierra Mazateca is not a small deal. It’s a mountain range north of Oaxaca. The region is strongly separate – remote, and difficult to access. The topography is not for rookies – steep on all sides, you can fall off and still get lost along the way. Mazateca is strongly associated with the culture of shamanism, and psychedelics – it was once a pilgrimage center of alternative tourism. Today, the region is rarely visited, and due to the difficult terrain, is sometimes overlooked even by coffee geeks. May they regret it! In Oaxaca, I came across a great Onno cafe – I drank local coffee there and really wished I could bring the local crop to HAYB.
